  Booked my male guinea pig in for desexing operation after being advised that the 'head vet' was experienced in doing the operation. I spoke with her via phone first to ensure she did have experience as the operation is not a routinely performed one. She did, so I went ahead. On the day I was unable to see her before the operation. The operation proceeded and all was supposedly 'fine', but he was sent home on antibiotics. That's when the difficulties began. There were post operation complications, but trying to see the head vet to have her recheck the guinea pig was near on impossible, as was trying to get her to return a call. At one stage I became very frustrated over the phone with my inability to see/have her return my calls, as I could see the guinea pig was potentially developing an infection. At that point the vet who was on the other end of the line laughed, which floored me. Yes, it's 'just' a guinea pig to them - but not to myself or the children he belongs to. At one point I was told to bring him back on the weekend she was on, IF he was displaying heat/leakage at the wound site. He wasn't, so I (uneasily) didn't take him back that weekend. I ended up taking him back less than two weeks later, opting to take whoever was on, as it was clear by then he was getting infected. The junior vet quite simply had no idea what to do, beyond telling me the head vet would be back in tomorrow and I could leave him overnight. I was there first thing in the morning and leaving him another 24hrs before he was seen was not an option at this stage. I asked for antibiotics at least - she gave the wrong dosage, something picked up by the next vet I rushed him to, and confirmed by her own head vet when I finally got her to return my call, nearly two weeks after she had first performed the operation. She did actually make one attempt early in the piece, left a msg saying she was heading out, I rang back 5mins after this msg and she was already gone. In short, the post operative services were non existent. My guinea pig will likely succumb to the infection he has, and my initial cost of 130 odd dollars to desex him, are now well over 400.00 trying to save his life. Take your large animals there, as this is what they subsequently told me they really do, but don't go near them with your small ones. Very, very disappointed, unimpressed and sad at what has subsequently unfolded.
